Samsung Galaxy S review shootout: Samsung Captivate for Major Carrier – AT&T

Samsung Galaxy S review shootout: Samsung Captivate for Major Carrier – AT&T
Out of the four major U.S. carriers, AT&T was the most in need of a solid Android smartphone, and it’s finally got one in the Samsung Captivate. Part of the Galaxy S series, the Captivate is by far AT&T’s most powerful and feature-rich Android device, boasting a gorgeous Super AMOLED touch screen, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, and some great multimedia features. It won’t win any beauty contests, and we wish AT&T would stop restricting app access, but overall, the Captivate delivers and is a great alternative to the iPhone 4. The Samsung Captivate for AT&T will be available starting July 18 for 9.99 with a -year contract (voice plan and minimum data plan required).
The Captivate’s touch screen was responsive and fast. We were able to quickly swipe through the various home screens and menu pages, and the scrolling experience was smooth, as was the pinch-to-zoom gesture. The display also has a six-axis accelerometer, which comes in handy for gaming, and it was fast to change the screen orientation whenever we rotated the phone.
The Captivate provides a premium viewing experience on its large, brilliant 4-inch display powered by Samsung’s Super AMOLED touch screen technology. Super AMOLED technology yields thinner displays, delivering one of the thinnest, most responsive full-featured smartphones in the industry. Samsung’s innovative display technology makes watching movies, viewing videos and playing games come to life like never before, even in bright light and outdoor environments.
In addition, the Samsung Captivate is designed with a six-axis sensor that combines the smartphone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to provide a smooth, fluid gaming experience when the user is tilting the device up or down or panning the phone to the left or right. The Captivate’s user interface also supports a series of advanced touch screen gestures capabilities including multi-touch pinch, long tap and zoom and vertical and horizontal swiping. This series of versatile gestures provide easier and quicker access to many applications including location-based services, Web browsing and digital photos.
Powering the Captivate is a 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird Application Processor, which produces amazing 3-D graphics, faster upload and download times and full richness of HD-like multimedia content. The Captivate is also outfitted with 3D sound capabilities, giving the user surround-sound stereo quality, when listening on hard-wired headphones.
Below the screen, are four touch-sensitive Android shortcuts: menu, home, back, and search. On the left side, there’s a volume rocker, and a power/lock button sits on the right. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on top, as well as a Micro-USB port, which is protected by a sliding cover. As usual, the camera is found on back, and just as a quick tip: if you want remove the battery door to swap out cells or access the SIM card or expansion slot, slide out the bottom portion of the phone first before removing the door

AT&T packages the Samsung Captivate with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a wired stereo headset, and reference material. For more add-ons, please check our cell phone accessories, ring tones, and help page.
Like the rest of the Galaxy S series, the Captivate runs on Android 2.1 with Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 interface. The latter is definitely improved from previous versions, with some enhanced functionality and a more polished look.
To start, there are new widgets, including one called Feeds & Updates and another called Buddies Now. Feeds & Updates streams updates from Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace, and you can choose to display content from one, , or all three of the social-networking sites, as well as set the refresh rate, ranging from 30 minutes to once a day. Buddies Now is like a favorites list and allows you to immediately call or text those contacts, as well as comment on any of their updates. There are a number of other Samsung widgets, as well as Android widgets and other shortcuts, all of which can be added to one of seven home screens.
The home screens can also be personalized with live wallpapers, but there are elements that can’t be changed: the pull-down notification tray on top, which now includes wireless manager and profile functions, and the toolbar along the bottom with quick-launch buttons to the phone app, e-mail, browser, and applications. Pressing the latter takes you to a nice grid view of all your apps; they’re spread out over several pages, which you can swipe from side to side to get to. We much prefer this layout over the standard Android one, where you have to scroll up and down. It feels more natural and easier to navigate.
“For one thing, AT&T blocked the phone from installing applications from anywhere other than the Android Market,” said Segan. Because of AT&T’s dedication to the iPhone, Segan’s biggest concern is that “Unlike Verizon and Sprint, AT&T has no strong narrative around why you would want an Android phone”.

Samsung F700 Review – More Than Just an Iphone Clone

Samsung F700 Review – More Than Just an Iphone Clone
Ever since the much-trumpeted announcement and subsequent release of the Apple iPhone, the race has been on to find the best alternative to this highly coveted (and lucrative) handset. With the arrival of Samsungs entry, the F700, we possibly have the first serious rival. With availability currently limited to Vodafone, it makes for a tantalising conundrum; iPhone or F700, O2 or Vodafone?
Design wise, the F700 is almost as streamlined as the iPhone as it contains very little on the front of the handset aside from the touchscreen. Though it’s not what you’d call ‘compact’, it’s still a decent size and a little extra thickness on the handset allows the inclusion of one feature sure to make it stand out from the iPhone – the QWERTY keyboard. The fact that the F700 isn’t much bigger and still manages to include a spacious keypad such as this is quite an achievement.
Though it isn’t quite as stunning to behold as the iPhone, the F700 will certainly draw attention with the main focus being on the massive 3.2” touchscreen display.
One particular spec that the iPhone was criticised for overlooking is 3G functionality. The chipset on the F700 will apparently be capable of data transfer speeds of 7.2Mbps, which is double the current maximum rate. Though no networks currently support this speed, surely it’s only going to be a matter of time, giving the F700 a clear head start over its current rivals who aren’t able to boast this.
In production, a vast amount of rumours were circulating that the camera would be 5MP to keep it in-line with Samsung’s other offerings, the G600 & G800, but this has now been downgraded (if you can call it that) to a 3.2MP offering. As this is not likely to be used mainly for pictures, this is more than adequate, especially since it easily trumps the iPhone’s 2MP camera.
Overall, the Samsung F700 is shaping up to be a very-interesting addition to the market, especially considering the amount of features that are packed into the device. It’s probably fair to say that the F700 is going to be the nearest competitor to the iPhone, but with all that it is capable of, it deserves to be seen as more than this.
The Samsung F700 is currently exclusive to
Vodafone, but we expect it to appear on O2 sometime in the near future.

Smartphone War II – Nokia N96 Vs. Samsung I8510 Vs. Sony Ericsson X1

Smartphone War II – Nokia N96 Vs. Samsung I8510 Vs. Sony Ericsson X1
As we head into the latter half of 2008, the world of mobile phones is set for an epic showdown, between 3 of the big names in the arena of smartphones: Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. But who will win?
Nokia N96 – the Nseries contender
Staring the list is an upcoming mobile phone from Nokia, the brand new N96, their newest flagship phone. And what a phone it is, powered by Symbian Series 60, and packing a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, awesome multimedia player, and with support for Mobile TV. The Nokia N96 even has a kickstand on the back, to hold up the phone up while you watch videos. How many mobile phones can you say that about? Oh, and it also comes with support for the new NGage gaming platform, from Nokia, something that makes games on mobile phones as good as games on their console counterparts (more or less). The Nokia N96 looks to have it all!
Ah, but there’s a problem, because this Nokia has some competition from Samsung…
Samsung i8510 – the Nokia-Beater?
Based on the same Symbian interface as the Nokia N96, the Samsung i8510 actually manages to pack even more into its slim frame. Surprisingly, of these two mobile phones, the Samsung one is actually the more powerful! It has just all the features of the Nokia N96 (minus the NGage stuff, although it still has games), but it trumps it easily in the camera department, as the Samsung i8510 is one of the first mobile phones to have a huge 8 megapixel camera. Let’s see the measly 5 megapixels (never thought I’d hear myself say that) on the Nokia try to compete! Other than that, the two mobile phones are pretty evenly matched, so it’s going to come down to whether you’re a Nokia fan, or a Samsung fan, or whether you want better gaming, or a better camera. That’s what are going to be the deciding factors between these two mobile phones.
Since they’re so powerful, what else can even match them?
Sony Ericsson X1 – the serious one
On paper, the Sony Ericsson X1 can’t come close to the other two mobile phones. It’s camera’s not as good, for a start (only 3 megapixels), but… it has something in its favour. The Sony Ericsson is the only mobile phone on this list to feature 2 crucial things: a MASSIVE, full touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard. So, in other words, unlike the Nokia and Samsung mobile phones, this is more of a PC in your hand. And that’s certainly accurate, as it’s powered by Windows Mobile. And it has GPS, like the others, and HSDPA, in this case, up to 7.2Mbps, and in the Sony Ericsson, you also get WiFi. But it’s the software that is the real draw, because of these 3 mobile phones, the Sony Ericsson is the closest to being a teeny tiny version of a full-on computer. Full internet using Internet Explorer, Outlook, full office support, easy sync to the PC, and tons upon tons of third-party software set the Sony Ericsson X1 apart from the other mobile phones, in terms of useful functionality. And that leaves us at an interesting conclusion. These 3 mobile phones might not actually come into conflict, since they all excel at different things. The Samsung has the best camera. The Sony Ericsson lets you do the most productive work on it. And the Nokia is the most fun. So, in a shocking conclusion, they might all actually complement each other!

Samsung Beam I8520 ? First Android With Projector

Samsung Beam I8520 ? First Android With Projector
The world’s second largest phone maker Samsung has unveiled another world’s first with the pico projector-enabled Samsung Beam i8520 demoed at the recently concluded 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
It runs on a proprietary 800 MHz processor running the latest Android 2.1 Éclair platform with the TouchWiz UI. This is a real top-of-the-line smartphone that also features a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED capacitive multitouch screen and an 8.1 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and true high definition 720p video recording at a cinema-quality 30fps. There’s just a handful of smartphones at the MWC you can count with one hand that can touch this phone.
Featuring the first ever Android smartphone with an integrated projector, the Beam ups the projector smartphone released last December by its main rival compatriot LG Electronics whose LG Expo GW820 QWERTY now looks primitive with a detachable snap-on pico projector.
This is not Samsung’ first nor is pico projection new as it had a similar pico projector smartphone released in January 2009 called the Samsung Show using the same Texas Instrument DLP chipset but now specified at WVGA resolution with a 6 lumens brightness that can project a 50-inch wide image.
Flagship Features
The Beam is your quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/19000) on the 2G network and a tri-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (900/1900/2100) on 3G. You get WiFi 802.11/b/g/n with DLNA for hotspot support and local data connectivity options for Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0. There’s also SatNav functionality with a built-in A-GPS receiver with Google Maps,
Multimedia comes with media playback for all the popular media file formats that includes DivX/Xvid video, a stereo FM receiver with RDS and DNSe for surround and stereo widening effects. You get listening options using either its 3.5mm headphone jack or going wireless with a Bluetooth A2DP stereo earphones.
Display is tops with 3.7-inch Super AMOLED multitouch capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors and WideVGA resolution (800 x 480) that has scratch resistant surface. It comes with the usual accelerometer for auto-rotate viewing
With a 14.9mm body thickness, Samsung maximized its CMOS sensor focal length to deliver an outstanding 8 megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, face/smile/blink detection and geo tagging for it’s a-GPS receiver. Another imaging standout with few peers is its high definition 720p video recording at a movie-grade 30fps with video light. It also comes with a front-facing secondary VGA camera for 3G video calls.
Its internal phone memory caps at 15 GB with 512 MB ROM, 384 MB RAM and 32 GB microSD expandability. Its battery life is arguably the best in the industry with 14 hours of talk times and 630 of standby time with a hefty 1800 mAh li-ion battery. Using its pico projector could eat more power but this didn’t seem to be a problem during its demo at the MWC.
Availability
The Samsung Beam i8520 is not expected to ship anytime soon and Samsung is not forthcoming with the information though we figure it could be in the middle of the year at the earliest. There’s also no price information but as a flagship smartphone, this is not meant for everyone.
To find out more about the Samsung Beam and other new phones visit www.best-mobile-contracts.co.uk. You can find more reviews for the Beam i8520 as well as a comparison of the best deals available. They are also a good place to look for a new Virgin Media phone.
